Green/Indigo: The green color comes from my dyeing the lau in indigo. I kept the lau in the indigo vat for several weeks to develop the deep color. They were dark blue when I first took them out of the vat. But the color of the lau came through, and the color turned into iridescent green. I believe the color of the indigo-dyed lau will vary from each dyeing, which means that the same color may not be reproduced again, making these bracelets extra special. I’m calling the ones with green and white stripes my “Duomo” series because they remind me of the striking dark and light stripes I saw on the walls of the cathedrals in Tuscany and Umbria, Italy.

Black: The black lau comes from Fiji. They’re naturally dyed from being buried in soil.

Statement:

My lauhala journey started after taking the introductory workshop at the Donkey Mill Art Center. I was immediately hooked on this traditional art; the simple graphic nature of weaving with infinite possibilities of patterns and designs, with so much history.

Weaving is the fun part, like icing on the cake. What I didn’t know until I took the workshop was the extensive amount of work that is involved in preparing the lau before you get to weave. I have learned to love the laborious process because I get to know how the lau would behave. Preparing lau is also the time when I get to dream what the lau might turn into. I truly enjoy coming up with patterns and designs of the bracelets, and it’s been heartwarming to receive words of encouragements and compliments from the respected lauhala weavers of Kona.
