After traveling thousands of miles, the ʻAlenuihāhā Channel is the first place where the prevailing northeasterly wind and current are disrupted and funneled through a 26-mile opening between Hawai'i and Maui Islands. Translated to "Great Billows Smashing”, Ferguson was interested in exploring this force in nature: a barrier between islands, and one of the most dangerous channels in the world.
